Speak Life

Have you ever had someone speak words of affirmation and encouragement to you that made your heart soar? Or maybe you remember how crushing it was to have someone tear you down with their words.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 “So encourage each other and build each other up.”

At Jewel Warriors there are several ways we practice speaking life. We speak life over ourselves- whenever our negative narrative in our heads are beating us down is when we can stop and start to declare God’s truths. We also practice speaking life to each other- when we hear the discouragement in another sister, we choose to speak life to her instead of tearing her down. The last way is by asking Holy Spirit to give us words of life- prophetic words- to speak to others.

1 Cor 14:1-5 “But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.”

Prophecy

What are prophetic words?  Prophecy in Greek means “to speak for another.” Historically it is linked to foretelling. In the Bible we think of the prophets as messengers who often foretold the future. When Paul talks about prophecy he was usually refering to it being for building up the church.

Prophecy should strengthen others, encourage them, and comfort them.

1. God Loving Through You
Prophecy is God loving on someone through you. We believe God wants to let people know- “I see you- I get you” by speaking prophetic words through His people.

2. Everyone can prophesy
Everyone can prophesy. Some people see this as one of the gifts of Holy Spirit that some people have and others don’t. When the spirit is in us, all the gifts are available to us.

3. Hearing God’s voice
We have to start with listening to God and hearing His voice. God’s voice comes as a flow of  spontaneous thoughts, words, feelings, or ideas that come into your mind. The more we hear God’s voice and recognize it, the more we will be able to communicate His messages to those around us.

Caution

Prophetic words can cause harm and even become spiritual abuse.  Whenever someone in a position of authority or perceived authority, uses prophetic words to try to bring “correction” or control someone’s behavior, or manipulate a situation, that is spiritual abuse. Sometimes people just really want something to be true and they believe God is giving them faith for you, but it’s not really what God wants for that time.

Guidelines to follow

  1. Do not give prophetic words about dates, mates or babies. These are such big events, that it takes extra prayer and maturity in hearing God’s voice to share those kinds of words.

  2. Give grace- mistakes will be made. We are not infallible- God is. We have to stay humble. We can hear wrong because of pride, presumption, or misunderstanding. If we only get a word, be careful about adding to it. You don’t have to give an interpretation. Also, the timing might be wrong.

  3. Take the message to God in prayer. Never take a prophetic word that is spoken over you as the Gospel. When someone gives you a prophetic word, thank them, and let them know you will be taking the message to God in prayer. You MUST ask God to confirm, challenge or change what was spoken.

  4. Test the words by checking the fruit. Remember that the enemy comes to kill, steal, and destroy. He deals in fear and shame (you are bad), and flattery (pride). When you get a prophetic word, you need to check them against this. Is it accusing you - making you feel unworthy? Do you feel afraid?
